University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Dalen Yamauchi fired a par 72 in the opening round of the John Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament Wednesday at the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu.

He was tied for 10th with two other players, and was among the top 20 players. California’s Joel Stalter shot a 5-under-par 67 for a one-stroke lead over New Mexico’s Gavin Green, who had a 68.

The Vulcans with a 296 team score were 8 over par and in seventh place, ahead of host Hawaii, tied for eighth with Texas El Paso with a 302 total. The Golden Bears of California were perched atop the scoreboard with a grand 4-under 284 total.

UHH’s James Hall was tied for 23rd with five other guys. Hall carded a 2-over 74. Other Vuls were Kyeton Littel (75), tied for 29th; Corey Kozuma (75), tied for 29th; Chris Shimomura (77), tied for 48th; Ric Yamamoto (80), tied for 68th; Jay Heglund (82), 82nd; Christian Agosto (83), 83rd; James Horton (84), tied for 86th.

Hawaii’s Nainoa Calip, a Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate, was tied for 83rd with an 83.

BYUH’s Trevor Gosar was last with an 86.
